Learning How to Love Yourself

When people tell me to love myself, I’m like, “What???”  It’s so vague and ethereal that it’s difficult to put into action.  So I thought I would simply identify some actions of exactly what “loving yourself” looks like.  Keep in mind this list is not exhaustive by any means.

What loving yourself is:

  • Following your inner guidance
  • Acceptance of your situation
  • Allowing change to unfold naturally
  • Being in the flow of life
  • Being open to change
  • Being open to life
  • Being open to learning
  • Just being open
  • Nurturing your creativity
  • Nurturing the parts of you that build up your power when you are depleted (alone time, outside time, reading time, etc.)
  • Allowing mistakes
  • Forgiving yourself and others
  • Doing things that make you happy
  • Following your bliss
  • Appreciating all of your experiences in life
  • Connecting with your Higher Power
  • Staying centered and grounded
  • Finding peace within yourself
  • Allowing room for growth
  • Giving up the need to know
  • Giving up the need to know how
  • Giving up the need to know why
  • Giving up the need to know when
  • Choosing joy
  • Being responsible for yourself and your perceptions and feelings
  • Being responsible for only yourself, and not others’ perceptions and feelings
  • Allowing yourself rest time
  • Owning and accepting what is great about you

What loving yourself is not:

  • Being in judgment of yourself and others
  • Regretting your actions
  • Worrying
  • Forcing the outcome
  • Forcing an opinion or belief
  • “Should”-ing on yourself
  • Thinking there is only one set way
  • Punishing yourself
  • Putting yourself in situations where you feel obligated
  • Disregarding your feelings
  • Disregarding your intuition
  • Breaking your commitments and your word with yourself
  • Allowing negativity in the form of thoughts, people, etc to occupy space in your mind and in your world
  • Being concerned about judgment of others
  • Being jealous of others
  • Allowing your lowest priorities and values to take up a majority of your time
  • Not letting your light shine
  • Letting others’ insecurities control how you present yourself

Take a moment to reflect, in what ways do you love yourself? Where are you not loving yourself?  What will you work on this week to be more in alignment with your heart?
